US ’mistakenly’ hits Assad terrorists, Russia calls for UNSC meeting
U.S.-led coalition air strikes killed dozens of ‘Syrian soldiers’ on Saturday, Russian sources said, putting a U.S.-Russian brokered ceasefire in jeopardy and prompting an emergency U.N. Security Council meeting, Reuters reported.

"We are still gathering information at this time but we have been able to confirm that earlier today the United States struck what we believe to be an ISIL target," said U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Samantha Power.

The United States military said the coalition stopped the attacks against what it had believed to be Islamic State positions in northeast Syria after Russia informed it that ‘Syrian military’ personnel and vehicles may have been hit.

Russia called for an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council after the incident which Power called "a stunt replete with moralism and grandstanding is uniquely cynical and hypocritical."

"Now of all times Russia calls the entire UN Security Council to convene urgently so that it can stand up here and express outrage. Imagine how often this council would be meeting if we were together every time the regime or Russia struck a hospital or a school or a bread line," Power said.

Moscow cited the strikes, which allowed Islamic State fighters to briefly overrun an Assad terrorists’ position near Deir ez-Zor airport, as evidence that the United States was helping the jihadist militants.

Russia said the strikes threatened to undermine the ceasefire in Syria brokered by Russia, which has been aiding Assad in the war, and the United States, which has backed some opposition fighters’ groups.
