Assad, Hezbollah bomb Wadi Barada, opposition fights back

Assad and Hezbollah terrorists continue their offensive launched twenty-six days ago on Wadi Barada area to the west of the capital Damascus amid a deteriorating humanitarian situation.

The Media Committee of Wadi Barada valley said Sunday that the villages of the valley were targeted by Assad and Hezbollah terrorists’ artillery and rocket shelling, in addition to heavy machine gun fire.

Opposition fighters fought intense clashes with Assad and Hezbollah terrorists on the fronts of Ein al-Fijeh, from the side of Bassimeh village, and Ard al-Dahra, the media committee said.

The committee added that the attackers failed to advance even after attempts to storm Ein al-Fijeh from three axes and were unable to control Ein al-Fijeh water spring facility.

The axes of Ein al-Khadra witnessed a considerable advance for opposition fighters, according to local sources. Assad and Hezbollah terrorists were not able to gain new territories on Ra’s al-Seira axis near Ein al-Fijeh, contrary to what pro-Assad media promoted, the sources added.

On the humanitarian level, more than 100, 000 civilians continue to suffer dire living conditions in Wadi Barada. In addition to the bombing, people in the valley have to endure life without water, electricity or any means of communication including landlines, cell phones and the Internet. The villages also face acute shortages of food, medicine and fuel due to the long siege.

A countrywide ceasefire in Syria was declared on Thursday (29 December 2016), after Turkey, Russia and opposition fighting factions reached a deal in the Turkish capital Ankara. According to the deal, Turkey and Russia would act as guarantor countries for the implementation of the ceasefire.
