Russian air strikes on the Syrian opposition are serving to strengthen ISIS in the region, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said Wednesday, News Fulton County reported.
“Russia and Assad regime are deliberately targeting the opposition and thus strengthening Daesh,” he said following a meeting with Riyad Hijab, the leader of the Syrian opposition High Negotiations Committee, Wired Gov reported.
Hammond added that “Their actions against civilian populations and infrastructure are in breach of international humanitarian law.”
His comments came hours after Britain’s special representative to Syria, Gareth Bayley, accused Russia of conducting a “scorched earth policy” against Syrian opposition forces and civilians.
“In my meeting with Dr. Hijab, I reaffirmed my support for the Syrian opposition’s Higher Negotiations Committee,” Hammond added.
