Alloush to Orient: No constitution draft accepted from Russia
Head of the opposition delegation in Astana talks Muhammad Alloush negated to Orient News that delegation was handed a Syria draft constitution written by Moscow.

Speaking exclusively to Orient News, Alloush stressed that there was no dialogue, direct or indirect discussions between Assad regime and opposition’s delegation, pointing out that the negotiations were between the opposition and Russia and with Turkey’and the UN attending.

Alloush added that the discussions focused on the mechanism to implement the ceasefire deal which was declared late December, in addition to observing and documenting violations, and whether or not retaliation to attacks is considered a violation.

UN Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura asked both Assad regime and the opposition delegations to submit a paper which includes suggestions to consolidate the ceasefire and talks about a political solution, Alloush said.

“We refused and highlighted that the aim of attending Astana talks is consolidating the ceasefire in Syria,” the head of the opposition’s delegation said.

A countrywide ceasefire in Syria was declared on Thursday (29 December 2016), after Turkey, Russia and opposition fighting groups reached a deal in the Turkish capital Ankara. According to the deal, Turkey and Russia would act as guarantor countries for the implementation of the ceasefire.

Astana talks, which took place on January 23-24 in the Kazakh capital, were held to consolidate the said ceasefire. According to opposition, once the ceasefire is implemented across Syria, it will lay the ground for political talks through the Syrian Higher Negotiations Committee (HNC) in Geneva which are scheduled for February 8, 2017.
