The explosion targeted a checkpoint for the “National Defense” militia in the neighborhood, killing three militiamen and injuring a number of others, some seriously, activists said.
Following the explosion, pro-Assad thugs or “Shabiha” arrived to the explosion site, amid security alertness. Ambulances rushed to the scene to rescue the injured.
Pro-Assad neighborhoods had recently witnessed a number of explosions that killed and injured dozens. Assad supporters accused Shabiha checkpoints of allowing car bombs to enter their neighborhoods in return for certain amounts of money.
During the past months, Assad supporters organized angry demonstrations, which started in Ekrima neighborhood and headed to al-Zahraa neighborhood, to protest what they described as “Assad regime’s inability to protect them”.
