Out of the Assad regime’s box: Remote control investment
Last week, the Assad regime TV hosted the head of the so-called “Syrian Investment Council”. The topic discussed was “investment opportunities in Syria.”

The lady who happens to head such a council, Enas al-Amawi, said verbatim that there are hundreds of investment opportunities in different Syrian governorates: 17 in al-Hasaka, 5 in al-Raqqa, 8 in Idlib, 19 in al-Qunitera, and so on.

The lady seemed to be living in another planet, disillusioned and out of touch economically, investment-wise, and probably mentally. This is the situation in the governorates she is talking about:

- Al-Hasaka has recently become under the Kurdish control. Through Daesh, the regime had some control over al-Hasaka, but recently, both the regime and Daesh are out.

- Al-Raqqa has been under Daesh control for over three years now. If the lady’s investments are going to be made by Daesh, that is another story. It would be at least a scandal for the regime; and the lady would be in trouble with the Assad Mukhabarat.

- Idlib has been for months in the hands of those who kicked the regime out of it. If, however, the investment in the form of barrel bombs and rockets, that is again another story and a new “creative Assad special” brand of investment.

- Al-Qunitera story is known since 1967. However, if the investment is to be in coordination with Israel, again, this is another investment scandal that would put the lady in big trouble with those who sold the Golan long ago.

Believe it or not, in the TV interview, the lady talked about coordination with a technical institute in Syria that would help in conducting investment by remote control. This is probably the newest invention in the world of business. No wonder why Syria was number 140 among world nations in investment before 2011. Now, however, it is number 172 among 178 states.

It is so difficult apparently for an inherently wrong-doer to face reality as it is perceived or presented by normal human beings. This is at the level of individuals. We have to imagine the impact and danger of such a situation when this inherent wrong-doing is at the level of a system rather than an individual. This is not a case of Goebbelism or even neo-Gobblesim; this is Assadism, a brand not yet known on planet Earth, but Syrians know it, and very well.
