Opposition considers Mistura’s Geneva paper, negotiation tracks
The Political Committee in the National Coalition for Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces, in the presence of members from the Higher Negotiations Committee (HNC) and the negotiating delegation, which participated in the recent round of Geneva talks, discussed Thursday in Istanbul preparations for the coming UN-brokered talks in Geneva, due to be held on March 23.

“The meetings discussed several papers which are being worked on and include the negotiation tracks, which the UN envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, talked about and constitute the agenda of the new round of negotiations,” the media office of the coalition quoted the Secretary of the Political Committee, Riyad al-Hassan as saying.

Al-Hassan pointed out that these papers: “include issue related to the formation, within six months, of a new governing body, in addition to the constitution, elections, combating terrorism and trust-building measures”.

The attendees had given their remarks on the “paper” submitted by de Mistura in the last negotiations round. It also includes the basic principles, al-Hassan added.

He said that “these preparations come in the context of the support given by the coalition to the negotiating delegation in order to achieve the comprehensive transitional process that meets the demands of the Syrian revolution of freedom and dignity”.

The latest round of Geneva talks was concluded around two weeks ago. The outcome was setting a four-point agenda, including governance, constitution and elections in Syria.
