Bashar Assad’s wife, Asmaa, has started treatment for early stage breast cancer, Assad state media reported on Wednesday (August 8).
A photo published by the Assad news agency SANA and the Assad presidency showed Asma Assad, 42, hooked up to a drip smiling and sitting next to her husband in what appeared to be a hospital room.
“Asmaa Assad begins the first stage of treatment for a malignant tumor of the breast which was discovered early,” said a statement issued on the Assad presidency’s Telegram feed.
Asmaa Assad was born and raised in London to Syrian parents. She married Assad in 2000 as he inherited the presidency from his late father who died on Saturday (June 10) 2000.
