Filippo Grandi, the head of the UN refugee agency, said on Monday (August 13) "We think that it’s premature to promote returns. Syria is still very insecure, there’s still a lot of war going on in Syria.”
"If some people decide, they make their own personal voluntary choice, we need to see how we can support them. But I think it’s premature to think of a mass repatriation program," he added after meeting with German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas in Berlin, AP reported.
Grandi added he would be visiting Syria in "a few days" to assess the situation for displaced people.
The Syrian crisis began nearly eight years ago with civilians continuing “to bear the brunt of a conflict marked by unparalleled suffering, destruction and disregard for human life,” according to the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA.
