Female survivor of Assad prisons speaks to Orient
Wafaa Najib, a former Syrian detainee, told Orient that she was exposed to torture in Assad regime’s detention centres.

Wafaa lives now in Azaz in Aleppo countryside after she was among thousands of forcibly displaced persons from Damascus countryside.

She was 19 when she was arrested by Assad militias in Damascus countryside in August 2012.

“After being interrogated for three hours, they accused me of conspiracy to execute terror works including killing and kidnapping,” Wafaa said,“ I could not defend myself,” she added.

“I used to help the IDPs and document Assad crimes,” she said.

“They insulted me and tortured me,” Wafaa added.

In most cases, the detainees were subject to “shabeh” and beating with electric sticks.

According to Wafaa, numerous cases of rape were reported.

“I used to pass by dead bodies of detainees who died under torture,” she said, I felt as if I were in a “slaughterhouse,” she recalled.

Wafaa was released from the notorious Adra prison where there were around 35 women and children in each cell.

Wafaa concluded by expressing her hope that all the detainees will be released soon.

Showing pictures of Syrian detainees including Tal Al-Mallouhi, Wafaa said she would never forget her friends who had asked her to be their voice.
